Clare Grill
Clare Grill: Parlance presents paintings that reveal layers of past gestures, textures, and subtle forms, where backgrounds are as vital as marks in the foreground. Drawing on years of evolution and small Signets as guides, her work interweaves color, shadow, and ethereal shapes with private references—letters, shorthand, and invented scripts—creating a visual language that feels intimate, enigmatic, and deeply attuned to memory, process, and abstraction.

Clare Grill

Clare Grill (b. 1979, Chicago) is a New York-based painter whose work explores memory, touch, and the passage of time through layered, abstract surfaces. Drawing inspiration from historical embroidery samplers, Grill uses oil on linen to create textured, meditative works that evoke domesticity and care. Her process involves building up and sanding back paint, revealing traces of earlier marks and forms. Grill earned her MFA from Pratt Institute and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. She has exhibited at Derek Eller Gallery, ZieherSmith, and Soloway, among others. Her work reflects a quiet, tactile engagement with presence and material memory.
