Sam Contis’s Phases examines bodies in motion through a three-channel film and a series of 24 black-and-white portraits of teenage cross-country runners in rural Pennsylvania. Five Kilometers follows three girls running separate 5K races at different times, synchronized in the gallery with the sound of their breathing and footsteps. The photographs capture runners nearing the finish line, portraying endurance, movement, and the passage of time through physical exertion.
