Kate Steciw: Pictures presents composites built from forgotten, authorless images — stock photography, screengrabs, internet downloads — layered and juxtaposed into works that resist containment by any single medium. Recent collaged canvas prints return this gesture to the physical realm, printed on canvas and mounted on wood panels with deliberate economy of moves. Bearing traces of digital origins — pixelated fragments, the hard edge of the rubber stamp tool — the works reduce their sources to irrelevance while creating physical objects that operate visually: Pictures in the sense Douglas Crimp defined, images that disorient by referencing something inevitably absent.
