Andy Goldsworthy: Red Flags

Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture San Francisco · Marina
Exhibition on view: Jul 1, 2026 - Jul 30, 2026

Andy Goldsworthy’s Red Flags marks the artist’s West Coast debut, presenting 50 monumental flags stained with red earth gathered from each U.S. state. First shown at Rockefeller Center in 2020, the installation replaces symbols of state identity with materials drawn from the land itself, inviting reflection on what unites the nation. The varied tones of red earth suggest geographic diversity while emphasizing shared humanity and solidarity.

The exhibition also features a selection of works exploring Goldsworthy’s longstanding use of red earth, a material he describes as “the earth’s veins,” alongside a film documenting the creation of Red Flags. Organized by FOR-SITE and presented with Fort Mason Art, the exhibition continues the artist’s enduring relationship with the San Francisco Bay Area following acclaimed public works including Spire, Wood Line, and Firehouse.
