Sandow Birk is a Los Angeles–based American artist whose painting, drawing, and printmaking trace the full sweep of contemporary American culture. His ambitious projects tackle inner-city violence, prisons, politics, war, surfing, and skateboarding—and include a hand-illuminated American Qur'an transcribed in a graffiti-inspired font, its pages illuminated with scenes of contemporary American life.
