Scandalous: Women in Surrealism

Richard Saltoun Gallery New York · Uptown
Exhibition on view: May 12, 2026 - Jul 2, 2026

Scandalous: Women in Surrealism brings together pioneering women Surrealist artists who not only participated in the movement but redefined its visual and conceptual language. Centering on Italian Surrealist Manina — admired by André Breton as "pure poetry" and presented here for the first time since her death in 2010 — the exhibition also features Stella Snead, Mimi Parent, Valentine Hugo, Toyen, Unica Zürn, Eileen Agar, Maria Martins, and others, alongside Pierre Molinier, included for his sustained exploration of gender fluidity. Across assemblage, painting, photography, and collage, the works reject fixed ideas of identity and representation in favor of ambiguity, metamorphosis, and radical invention.
