Kevin Sullivan: Selected Works: Coda

Not There Los Angeles · Downtown LA
Exhibition on view: Jun 20, 2026 - Jul 11, 2026

Here’s a condensed exhibition-style summary:

Kevin Sullivan (1959–2025) spent four decades examining the overlooked artifacts and forgotten residues of everyday culture. Working across performance, painting, sculpture, and writing from Los Angeles, he developed a practice that dissolved distinctions between the monumental and the mundane, treating neglected objects and cultural ephemera with equal rigor. Trained at UCLA under Paul McCarthy and Don Suggs, Sullivan brought a precise conceptual approach to works ranging from his Residuum paintings to performances such as The Revolutionist, Towards an Ape Theatre, and old taco bells. As both artist and critic, he explored memory, decay, and institutional forgetting, arguing through objects, images, and actions that meaning accumulates not through grandeur, but through sustained attention to what remains.
