In SHIFTY, Christian Franzen presents luminous paintings of the Southern California coast drawn from memory rather than photographs. Using layered glazes, airbrush, and surface abrasion, he creates horizons built from stacked bands of color that hover between landscape and abstraction. Weathered surfaces, scratches, and ghostlike motifs—owls, draped figures, a black cat—introduce illusion and unease, turning coastal scenes into shifting records of perception and memory.
