Solid Pictures at the Cantor Arts Center is the first major exhibition on photosculpture, invented in 1859 by François Willème. His studio used projection and mechanical tools to turn photographic negatives into solid portrait figures for Second Empire France's middle class. Rare surviving objects show how these failed commercial experiments anticipated 3D scanning and printing.
