Tanya Aguiñiga: Coyolxauhqui Imperative

Volume Gallery Chicago · West Town
Exhibition on view: Jun 13, 2026 - Jul 25, 2026

Tanya Aguiñiga removes threads from delicate gauze in a subtractive, reverse-embroidery process, mounting the openwork over black velvet to depict opossums, coyotes, vultures, snakes, and bats long revered in Mesoamerican cosmology yet now dismissed as pests. Referencing Otomi weaving tied to her family history, the work reflects on perception and unrecognized value.
