Artist(s)

Robert Colescott
An exhibition of paintings and drawings by the late artist Robert Colescott, curated by Los Angeles–based artist Umar Rashid. Spanning five decades, the show serves as an entry point into The Anansean World of Robert Colescott—a parallel universe shaped by the archetype of the trickster, where natural and social orders are disrupted and reimagined. Rashid positions Colescott as a modern-day trickster, akin to Ananse, Hermes, and Loki—figures who challenged divine authority with wit, rebellion, and subversion. Much like these mythic messengers, Colescott navigated a fraught and exclusionary art world with satire, intelligence, and a fearless eye for cultural critique. His work dismantles dominant narratives while confronting issues of race, power, and representation. Forged in the crucible of mid-20th-century America, Colescott’s bold visual language reclaims history, mocks its distortions, and invites viewers into a mythic space where meaning is as unstable—and revealing—as the gods themselves.
