The Eight Directions of the Wind features new site-specific installations by acclaimed British artist and author Edmund de Waal across three of The Huntington’s most iconic spaces. Combining porcelain, natural materials, and literary references, the works explore the movement of people, objects, and ideas across cultures and time. Responding directly to The Huntington’s collections and gardens, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on memory, migration, and the stories that connect places and histories.

Edmund de Waal

Edmund de Waal (b. 1964) is a British artist, ceramist, and bestselling author whose work explores memory, migration, materiality, and the movement of objects across cultures. Known for his porcelain installations created in dialogue with museums and historic sites around the world, de Waal combines ceramics, architecture, and literature to uncover layered histories. His acclaimed books include The Hare with Amber Eyes and The White Road, and his work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the British Museum, the Frick Collection, and the Rijksmuseum.
