Matthew Weinstein: The Setting Sun is Beautiful Because of All It Makes Us Lose presents new sun paintings in which discrete oil strokes form loose horizontal bands — glowing atmosphere and waves of heat — around a schematized sun of diminishing rings at each canvas's upper center. The circular border of negative space causes the image to oscillate between memory and totemic presence, intuition and contemplation. Horizon lines suggest endless pursuit. Against the exteriorizing forces of authoritarian media, Weinstein's paintings create openings for self-generated meaning — the self located not in image or technique but in the imminence of being within ever-shifting tones of sky.
