Ancco: Turnover

Whaam! New York / Lower East Side / East Village
Exhibition on view: Mar 19, 2025 - Apr 5, 2025

Born into a dairy farming family in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, ancco grew up surrounded by the splendor of nature and fields of black-and-white cows. Right before her 10th birthday, her father gave her a Windows 95 computer, on which she learned to draw and to communicate with others through art. This put her on the path towards becoming an artist. The precision and obsessive detail that digital drawing enables can still be found in her current works, which are characterized by intricate and thoughtful shapes, brushstrokes, and textures. In recent years, ancco has been actively exploring the medium of ceramic. Unlike computer-based creation, the process of making ceramics is heavily influenced by external circumstances and chance. This change has dismantled the artist’s perfectionist tendencies, allowing her to learn and embrace acceptance and harmony. Influenced by her interaction with materials, the Internet, international friends, life in Tokyo, and old toys, ancco represents a new generation of Japanese artists who draw from various inspirations to create unique, innovative works.
