Underground presents over seventy recent works on paper by Tim Steele, drawing its title from the John St Gallery’s basement setting and the dark humor of fictitious tombstone drawings. Influenced by Underground Comix, Hogarth, Daumier, and early animation, Steele’s work unfolds like a nonlinear graphic novel as viewers navigate the space. A large-scale wall drawing enhances the immersive effect, while interspersed writings deepen the exploration of community, identity, fear, and time.
