Who Wants Candy? is an exhibition of new figure paintings by Bobby Morebed that reject the pieties of good taste. Working in a lineage of American transgression from John Waters to Mike Kelley, Morebed employs bad taste as method and abjection as structure. The paintings engage 1990s figuration while refusing composure, featuring bound, exposed, exaggerated, and grotesque bodies rendered in blunt, distressing handling—plus-size figures staged in scenarios of constraint and theatrical bondage. Governed by punk logic, the works resist the pieties of refinement while retaining tenderness.
