Gray Area is a nonprofit at the intersection of art and technology, founded in 2006 by Josette Melchor and Peter Hirshberg and incorporated in 2008 as Gray Area Foundation for the Arts. Since 2014 it has occupied the restored 1940 Grand Theater at 2665 Mission Street, a former movie palace turned cultural incubator hosting immersive exhibitions, performances, festivals, and creative-code education. Known for its Artist Fellowship and civic-tech projects, it remains a leading Bay Area hub for digital culture in 2026.
