John Chiara (b. 1971, San Francisco) is known for his innovative camera obscura photographs, created using handcrafted large-format cameras and direct positive materials. His work reimagines traditional photographic processes to produce immersive images of California’s landscapes and urban environments. Chiara’s photographs are held in major museum collections including the J. Paul Getty Museum, LACMA, the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. His 2017 monograph, John Chiara: California, was published by Aperture.
