For ten years, Stephen Truax has painted on-site in single sessions—friends and lovers in repose, his partner Thomas, beaches at Fire Island Pines, a New Hampshire lake—in gouache and pencil on small watercolor tablets. Again, for the First Time is Truax’s Los Angeles debut, featuring new paintings from his plein air practice. Looking to Fairfield Porter and Lois Dodd, he treats figure and landscape with equal directness, revisiting familiar sites as if encountering them fresh each time.
