Harper's presents Escaping the Aviary, Christian Ruiz Berman's first solo show with the gallery. His paintings build compositional systems rather than scenes — plants, animals, figures, and decorative objects moving through geometrically structured, Escher-like spaces drawn from histories of migration, Mexican visual culture, and magical realism. The exhibition invokes Sophia, the Gnostic figure of wisdom, as a quiet framework: transformation emerging from within rather than imposed from outside. Boundaries stay provisional, meaning stays fluid, and liberation arrives through reordering rather than rupture.
