Laura Aguilar

Laura Aguilar (1959 to 2018) was a pioneering photographer whose deeply personal work explored identity, landscape, and belonging through self-portraiture and intimate community portraits. Drawing from her experiences as a Chicana lesbian, Aguilar created powerful images that challenged conventional ideas of beauty and visibility while documenting LGBTQ+ and Mexican American communities in Southern California. Her work has become a landmark in contemporary photography and queer art history.
