RedSkyFalls is a multi-part installation featuring video projections that react in real-time to seismic activity from around the world. Created by Lisbon-based artist Alexandre Estrela for the Portugal Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale, the work manifests tectonic movements visually and aurally, with projections freezing and sounds erupting whenever seismic events are registered globally. The installation functions as an "amplifier of empathy," drawing attention to even the smallest seismic movements and reminding viewers of the constant motion of tectonic plates beneath us. At the Wattis Institute, the exhibition includes one of the Réplicas (larva)—aluminum plates with engraved artificial creatures whose animated behaviors respond to seismic events—displayed as part of an international collaboration with institutions in seismically active locations.
