Willie Birch: Stories to Tell

California African American Museum Los Angeles · South Los Angeles
Exhibition on view: May 5, 2026 - Oct 21, 2026

The first career retrospective of Willie Birch brings together works from 1968 to the present, tracing his evolving exploration of Black American life and global cultural exchange. Spanning early works, papier-mâché sculpture, and large-scale works on paper, the exhibition examines Birch’s concept of “retentions”—the ways African traditions, narratives, and aesthetics persist and transform within American culture.
