Barbara T. Smith, a pioneer of performance art, began her artistic journey in 1966 with a Xerox 914 photocopier in her Pasadena home, using it to produce 50,000 prints of household items, photographs, and even her own body. Her work explored iteration, modularity, and reproducibility, creating two-dimensional compositions, sculptures, and books. Smith’s creations, rooted in a time of personal and societal change, reflect her fascination with process, time, and the transformative journey of existence.
