Film, Time & the Moving Image

Renée Green: Secret

Secret

Renée Green: Secret originates from the artist's 1993 residency in Le Corbusier's semi-abandoned housing block in Firminy, France. Combining black-and-white photographs, three-channel video, and multilingual soundtracks, the work examines the building as modern ruin through personal observation and social document. Green juxtaposes her diaristic voice against the realities of immigrant residents and an international art exhibition, probing utopia, inhabitancy, and travel. Expanded in 2006 and 2010, the work returns now to New York where it was first shown.

Shu Lea Cheang: LOVER LOVE

LOVER LOVE

LOVER LOVE is a four-channel video installation by Shu Lea Cheang, featuring music by Cheang’s longtime collaborator Aérea Negrot. Made with eight intergenerational trans and gender nonconforming performers in Tucson, Arizona, the film moves between motel rooms, junkyards, and desert landscapes where souls escape oppression to take transhuman flight. Viewers shift moveable screens on tracks, creating new video compositions on the spot and activating segments of Negrot's song “It’s Lover, Love,” a dreamy, minimalist meditation on the lingering traces of broken promises and vanished love—and a tribute to the late musician, who died by suicide in 2023.
