Museum Mile: The Met and Its Neighbours

This exhibition presents six important early works by Robert Rauschenberg from the Cy Twombly Foundation, organized during the centennial of the artist's birth. The works, selected from Twombly's personal collection, document key milestones of Rauschenberg's early development, including one of his earliest known surviving sculptures from 1950, the life-size photogram Untitled (1950), and key examples from the Black Painting, Elemental Sculpture, and Combine series. Together, they chart Rauschenberg's engagement with Marcel Duchamp's radical reconception of art making and his commitment to acting in the gap between art and life, while anticipating the incorporation of technology and performance into his practice.

Robert Mangold’s paintings are investigations. Across more than five decades, he has returned to a focused set of concerns—line, color, shape, and structure—testing their relationships through a sustained and deliberate practice. The works in this exhibition, spanning from 1973 to 2012, reflect both continuity and variation. While they differ in format, scale, and composition, each holds to a consistent intent: to explore how a painting can exist as a complete and self-contained object.

In 1950, Lillian Bassman was told her fashion photographs were too abstract—you could barely see the clothes. She kept going. Bazaar and Beyond at The Met highlights the influence and audacity of her magazine career at Harper's Bazaar, where she distilled gowns to their essential silhouettes through darkroom distortion, tissues, brushes, and bleach. Rare vintage prints, collages, and maquettes chart her course from design apprentice to one of fashion photography's most daring voices.

Fourteen 1960s works on paper by Agnes Martin — Robert Elkon’s first represented artist when the gallery opened in 1961. Hand-drawn lines, grids, and delicate watercolor washes; several traveled with her Guggenheim/Tate retrospective. At Elkon Gallery through July 24.

Roger Brown (1941 to 1997) created boldly stylized paintings that blend vivid color, flattened perspective, and allegorical storytelling to examine the relationship between humanity, nature, and the built environment. Associated with the Chicago Imagists, Brown transformed weather, cityscapes, mythology, and everyday life into symbolic narratives that address environmental change, political anxiety, and personal experience. Weathervane highlights his ability to contrast the monumental forces of nature with the fragility of human ambition, revealing a world suspended between beauty, vulnerability, and impending transformation.

Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are pleased to present Andreas Schulze’s first exhibition at the New York gallery, Cake, featuring new paintings from a body of work shown publicly for the first time. Cake is a motif that the artist has revisited at different points in his career. As a subject involved with presentation, decoration, pleasure and everyday comforts, it also encapsulates many of the ideas around staging, color, emotion and the details of daily life that Schulze has explored across nearly five decades of painting. In shades of whipped cream and fruit-filled abstractions, the works illustrate Schulze’s unique picturing of the world as well as his layered references to popular culture and art history.
