SoHo & Canal: The Long Tail

Shani Strand: Everything Must Be Returned presents an immersive installation occupying the entire ground floor of Artists Space, centering on a video titled R.I.P. He Deserves It — a clown story and revenge fantasy drawing on C.L.R. James's writing on Hegel and Louise Bennett-Coverley's satirical poem on the Windrush migration. Sculptures in bamboo, rebar, JJJ Bricks, and ceramics depict morningstars and duppies — Jamaican Patois for ghosts — alongside site-specific resin pools evoking superstition, death, and violence. Guided by trickster figures at the edges of violence and spaces of potential freedom, Strand examines how visible objects and social performances operate as metonyms for invisible ghosts, infrastructure, and history.

Liang Fu’s latest body of work explores the shifting relationship between image and material, creating luminous paintings that seem to hover between appearance and dissolution. Using hand-prepared pigments mixed with mica quartz, the Paris-based artist builds pearlescent surfaces that evoke water, moonlight, and transparency. New works on selenite and sculpted stone frames extend his investigation of fragility, transformation, and the expressive potential of matter itself.

Toshihisa Yoda: Continuum, 1967–Today traces six decades of the quietly enduring painter's practice through 30 works, from early geometric abstractions made with masking tape to recent paintings that demonstrate continued evolution. Arriving in New York from Japan in 1967, Yoda immersed himself in the downtown art scene while remaining steadfastly committed to his own language of abstraction — gentle color accumulations, rhythmic brushwork, and meditative composition drawing on both Japanese tradition and the visual geometry of New York's cast-iron facades and aging bridges. Presented in two consecutive parts at NowHere's new Lispenard Street gallery, the survey also marks a homecoming for the gallery itself.

Susan Hauptman (1947 to 2015) created psychologically charged charcoal drawings that explore identity, vulnerability, and the quiet drama of everyday objects. Best known for her meticulous self portraits and poetic still lifes featuring porcelain figurines, she combined technical precision with emotional restraint to produce works that are both intimate and unsettling. Her drawings invite prolonged looking, revealing subtle shifts in expression, gesture, and atmosphere that blur the line between observation and introspection.

A summer group exhibition at Kate Werble Gallery's SoHo space at 474 Broadway, on view through August 14, 2026. The Silent Aisle brings together seven artists working across mediums: Gavin Kenyon's sculptures, Bridget Mullen's dense, character-filled paintings, Tom McGrath's landscapes, Masaomi Yasunaga's experimental ceramic vessels, and works by Yan Cynthia Chen, Marie Lorenz, and photographer Thomas Dozol.
