The eighty-second edition of the longest-running survey of American art fills floors 1, 5, 6, and 8 of the Whitney (March 8-August 23, 2026). Co-organized by Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer, it gathers fifty-six intergenerational artists, duos, and collectives, from across the US and places shaped by American power, who explore kinship, geopolitics, technology, and precarious ecologies in a wide range of media, suggesting togetherness through difference.

Goran Medak calls observational painting "looking out the window"—and he refuses to do it. This New York debut exhibition presents works spanning four decades by the Croatia-born, New Jersey-based artist, who taught himself to paint by copying Old Masters at the Louvre. His fantastical compositions juxtapose fields of color with filigree-like detail, choreographing disparate elements into pictures that resist easy reading, familiar yet persistently unresolvable.

First US exhibition of the late Balinese artist Oototol (c. 1930–2008): large monochrome Chinese-ink paintings from Pengosekan Village merging Balinese storytelling, Sukarno-era political iconography, and queer undertones. At Fort Gansevoort, extended through July 31.

Documentary photographer Jamie Johnson spent more than a decade photographing Irish Traveller children living in caravans along roadsides and in open fields throughout Ireland, returning to the same families as the children grew up. Drawn from her award-winning monograph and new, unpublished work, the exhibition captures the grit, beauty, resilience, and joy of an indigenous community that has long faced prejudice — and the individuality of young people with dreams like children everywhere.

Working entirely from imagination, often through the middle of the night, Oswald Saenz distills women, houses, and flowers down to their most fundamental curves, infusing them with hallucinatory color and traces of spirit made flesh. A cousin of Fernando Botero, Saenz draws from South American magical realism—and from grief. Since his mother's death in 2021, his artistic practice has become, in his words, her way of speaking through him. Her presence dwells in every woman he conjures on paper.
