Founded by Jeffrey Fraenkel in 1979, Fraenkel Gallery is one of the world's leading photography galleries, exploring photography and its relation to other media through nearly 400 exhibitions and an acclaimed publishing program. It represents Robert Adams, Sophie Calle, Nan Goldin, Richard Misrach, Alec Soth, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, among others, and works with the estates of Diane Arbus, Peter Hujar, and Garry Winogrand. Since 1991 it has occupied the fourth floor of 49 Geary Street near Union Square, still active as of 2026.
